Wire Taps: Washington Nationals' CF Option Mike Cameron Retires.

In a mid-January MLB Network Radio interview with Cliff Floyd and Jeff Joyce, 39-year-old, 17-year veteran outfielder Mike Cameron told the hosts that he was preparing for Spring Training with the Washington Nationals, but didn't know what to expect heading into what would have been his 18th MLB season with his ninth different team. The 6'2'', 210lb center fielder split the 2011 season between Boston and Florida, joining the Marlins in a trade that sent a PTBNL and cash to the Red Sox, and hitting for a combined .203/.285/.359 line with 10 doubles and nine home runs in 78 games and 269 plate appearances. The Nationals brought Cameron in on a minor league deal, and he told the MLB Network Radio hosts he wanted to make sure his legs were in shape before he headed to Spring Training, "Because it looks like I'm going to have to go down and try to put on a show in Spring Training to get on the squad."

Star-divide

"There's really not a whole lot of urgency for me," the Chicago White Sox' 1991 18th Round pick responded when asked about having to win a spot this Spring. "I just want to go and see and make sure that I can still play at this level," Cameron said. "I won't put that much pressure on myself like it's life and death for me to try do it, but I always try go into Spring Training and compete a little bit, because, I heard George Brett say this one time, that no matter where you go play baseball, whether it's a pick-up game, softball, celebrity game or whatever, you don't want to embarrass yourself when you go out on that field, and if I felt like it was getting to that point, I would just kind of like slide off, and go off into the sunset in my little black Escalade."

The chances of Mike Cameron embarrassing himself were slim, he was expected to at least start the season on the Nationals' roster as part of a platoon in center, but he apparently determined that he couldn't start another Spring. The Nationals announced this morning on Twitter (@NationalsPR) that the outfielder had informed them that he would retire from the game before ever having reported to Spring Training. He told the MLB Network Radio hosts at the time of the interview that he was following the Nats news this winter to keep himself informed, and from what he'd read, "It sounds like [Davey Johnson] kind of likes Jayson Werth in center, that is, if [Bryce] Harper's ready to play, so then I'll just kind of see where I figure in somewhere in there."

"But I understand [that] they're trying to make sure that their team is ready for [2012] with the best twenty-five players they can possibly get," Cameron said, "Hopefully I go down [there] and open up eyes a little bit." Cameron said he was excited about the possibility of joining an up and coming team like the Nationals, who he compared to the Milwaukee Brewers he joined in 2008, but, "... with better pitching." Instead of competing for a spot, Cameron will retire from the game after 1,955 games and 7,884 plate appearances over which he had a .249/.338/.444 career line with a 162-game average of 32 doubles and 23 HR's.

Cameron's decision does leave the Nationals with one less option to fill the center field position, however. Roger Bernadina, Rick Ankiel and Jayson Werth could play center, of course, and the Nats' plans for Bryce Harper will determine how the outfield looks on Opening Day, though talk of Washington pursuing a center fielder will continue all Spring. The Nationals have Eury Perez, Corey Brown, Xavier Paul, Brett Carroll and Jason Michaels in camp this Spring. Do they need another option? After failing to find a fit for their CF/leadoff needs this winter, D.C. GM Mike Rizzo said the possibilities available for 2013 were more promising. Will Cameron's decision force the Nationals to make another move before Opening Day?

• Update: 6:15 pm EST - via MLB.com's Bill Ladson on Twitter (@washingnats): "I just spoke to Mike Cameron. He decided to retire last Wednesday. #Nats GM Mike Rizzo tried to talk him out of it."

Would have been an interesting bench bat...but

I’m not too beat up on his decision to retire… I just wish that Matt Stairs did the same for the Nationals this time last year, but he decided to give it a go when he knew there was nothing left in the tank.

Rizzo… put another couple of prospects together and pull in a CF/leadoff- type player… even trade our rights to our first couple of rounders in the 2012 June draft plus a good prospect or two currently in our system…

Teams Still can’t trade draft picks can they?

No, not just any pick...

There is a way to trade picks awarded in the so-called “Competitive Balance Lottery” that’s part of the new CBA, but I’m not sure I understand how that works yet.

I still don't get how a trade makes good long term sense

trade for who? what, deplete a still good but depleted system (and good thing we can’t trade our first few picks, because you always need to build the farm) for one year of B.J., who we can sign for just cash next year, along with a host of other guys? Rizzo is right on this one, however much I’d like our most glaring hole to be filled right away.

I'm thinking bigger than BJ Upton

I do like Adam Jones more as a trade target for CF. That would complete our lineup nicely… imo

Adam Jones would be an upgrade

But he doesn’t really complete the lineup … imo. Jones would certainly be an upgrade from what the Nationals currently have, but he would also be yet another high strikeout (>100 per season) low OBP (.319 OBP, both last year and for his career) hitter. He would add to the lineup, but complete it? I think not.

I told you that Adam Jones was the answer in center field....

Wait a minute……Adam Jones might have a high strikeout rate???? Seriously, Adam Jones was the hitter that gave the Nationals the most trouble last season. The O’s are not a very good team and he really stands out. lFurthermore, he has been improving each year. Are you kidding, this guy can hit 30+ home runs. He is good defensively, has some speed on the bases, and hits with power. What else do you want/ I rest my case….

When has Adam Jones ever hit 30+ home runs?

Never. In fact, he’s only hit more than 20 one time in 4.5 seasons. I don’t know what defensive metrics you use, but UZR/150 rates his CF defense at below average (-3.4).

And is he improving every year?
OPS 2008-2011: .711, .792, .767, .785. I don’t see improvement each year…

I’m not saying he’s a bad player, but you’re making him out to be something that he isn’t.

All things equal I take Upton over Jones any day

But all things aren’t equal. And Upton can walk at the end of the year. But Upton’s a plus fielder, he’s got more power, he’s way more of a threat on the basepaths, and he gets on base more than Jones even with a low average. I just don’t see where all the Jones love is coming from

I think it comes from the fact that so many people are still both Nats and O's fans or soemthing

And it’s really easy to overvalue your own players?

Why is Adam Jones so popular?

He looks like an overpaid option to whoever has him. Then again, the statement “The O’s are not a very good team and he really stands out” is like saying the Capitals weren’t a really good team, but Chris Clark still scored thirty goals (And if you’re saying “Who is Chris Clark?”, that’s really ok). That, and I don’t want any O’s on my team. Peter Angelos has ruined 1/30th of the players in baseball, making it impossible for me to get behind them.

I like Adam Jones

I also like B.J. Upton a lot too, but I always overvalue defense and power over speed. I like Span, but his injury and the amount it would take to pull him from the Twins is probably too much. The Twins are probably on the right track if they can all stay healthy (Mauer and definitely Morneau) and could use pitching. The reason Jones is so popular is that he plays on the O’s and is the only true standout guy on that team, outside for maybe Weiters.

Jones is putting up decent numbers and given the fact that the O’s are a franchise in lots of trouble, he could net a good amount of prospects to help a miserable minor league system. That being said the O’s probably want WAY too much for him and by keeping him will probably mess up his career until he leaves via FA.

Adam Kilgore:
Bumped into Adam LaRoche at Panera tonight. His first stop after driving, over six days, all the way from Kansas. Guy’s got good taste.

Six days to drive from Kansas?

Did he get lost on the way?

The straight story is that

he was driving a lawn tractor

Alvin: I'd give each one of 'em a stick and, one for each one of 'em, then I'd say,

‘You break that.’ Course they could real easy. Then I’d say, ‘Tie them sticks in a bundle and try to break that.’ Course they couldn’t. Then I’d say, “That bundle… that’s family.”

LOL

I remember that movie.

Liked that film.
Panera is good taste?

Morelike overpriced cold cuts and Campbells soup.

I really like Campbells Tomato

True story.

Well now, since you started it... instead of Panera (eat your heart out) how bout a meal at Norms, or the Copper Penny as described by Tom Waits?

“I was always eh, kinda want to like consider myself kind of a pioneer of the palette, a restaurateur if you will. I’ve wined, dined, sipped and supped in some of the most demonstrably beamer epitomable bistros in the Los Angles metropolitan region. Yeah, I’ve had strange looking patty melts at Norms. I’ve had dangerous veal cutlets at the Copper Penny. Well what you get is a breaded salsbury steak in a shake-n-bake and topped with a provocative sauce of Velveeta and uh, half-n-half. Smothered with Campbell’s tomato soup. See I have kinda of a uh…well I order my veal cutlet, Christ it left the plate and it walked down to the end of the counter. Waitress, ? she’s wearing those rhinestone glasses with the little pearl thing clipped on the sweater. My veal cutlet come down, tried to beat the shit out of my cup of coffee. Coffee just wasn’t strong enough to defend itself.”

I can’t wait til one of those establishments adds “The Strasburger” to the fare offered on one of their plastic laminate menu!
Anyone care to describe the ingredients of that concoction? (see I was able to make this relevant to the Nats!)

You can get anything you want, at Alice’s restaurant.

exceptin' Alice

Sounds fine to me. Panera just does not do anything for me.

When I’m home in Florida, my parents will go to Panera while I’m sleeping late and bring back some of those sugary cinnamon “bagels” (and that’s a treat IMO). Besides that….pass. I’m not a soup eater.

That, and the price has gone up significantly recently, and I’ve found all sorts of things in my food (and had friends report similar findings). How could a staple even end up remotely near the soup in a to-go bag?

Staples are not Good Eats.
Random question

Why does everyone here always say “Rizzo points to head”? I always assumed he did it regularly when discussing moves, but I just googled it and I can’t find anything except for from this site. Did you guys just make it up?

We kinda made it up...It was from a WaPost article by Chico Harlan back in 2009... cat daddy3000 searched the archives for this recently...

the origin of “Rizzo points to head” = Chico Harlan | April 28, 2009;
Some thoughts from MIKE RIZZO

Federal Baseball: “Rule 5 History”

From the WaPost article:

Q: When you signed those guys, it was to minor league deals. Not everybody knew what to expect —

A: Not everybody knew what to expect, but somebody did. [Rizzo pointed to his noggin and laughed.]

“those guys” = Kip Wells and Julian Tavarez

[Rizzo pointed to his noggin and laughed] just wasn’t as catchy as [Rizzo points to head]

This is devastating news.

I can only imagine what kind of adjustments the Nats will make to save the season.

In case anyone thinks I’m just funnin’, I am.

We need Brad Wilkerson!
Makes Sense

When they signed Ankiel Mike knew what time it was… can’t blame him

And to think Patrick, you didn't think there was a post in Cameron's retirement.

I think the Nats dream is for LaRoche to take in spring training and flip him and maybe a pitcher for a CF.

And by take I mean rake.
Unique platoon

Zuckerman included an option:

Against right-handers, Werth could be in right field with Ankiel in center. Against lefties, Werth could be in center field with veteran Mark DeRosa in right.

Can soon to be 37 year ago Mark DeRosa hand right field as part of a platoon?

Oh, dear.

Where’s the O?

In left, and the minors.
Sorry for the Typo

It should be "Handle’ instead of "Hand"

DeRosa in right?

[Yack Icon]

Correct

During my cub fandom days, pre-nats, Derosa would make appearances at 2nd/OF/3rd. I don’t recall ever having concerns about his ability to play at any of those positions.

The concern in all reality is that he is older now.

Bryce has a legitimate shot to make this roster. he is blocked by a 37 year old utility player.

Nice touch by the Canadiens

Very Nice Indeed

Thanks for sharing….that was a great video. If I am not mistaken, all the Expos HOF players have their jerseys hanging in the arena as well? Montreal is where these memories should be cherished and displayed….for those who enjoyed, cheered for, and loved them; not in a city where the fans do not share those same sentiments.

A few of the people around Federal Baseball were Expos fans…me included. I’m happy to see Expos coverage here, but I completely understand regular DC sports lovers’ issues.

As a Nats only fan I think it would be crazy not to marry the Expo's history to the Nats..

We should do this because we’re baseball fans first. Including the Expo’s doesn’t water down my enthusiasm for the Nats it broadens my Natstown experience and widens the landscape of Natstown itself. We know there are a lot of folks here that followed the Expo’s I’d hope we do everything possible to let them know this is still their team. It’s just called the Washington Nationals, oh yeah and it’s in a different country, too. Venez et laissez-nous avoir un grands fans Expo saison.

BTW We should do everything we can to make sure the Nats honor Gary Carter.

Rizzo says he won't, I repeat, won't start Stras late or try to stretch him out to save him for potential late-season action...

via Zuckerman:

“We’re not going to discuss six-man rotations, or not starting him until a month later, just to get him through a season.”

interesting

No sense in arguing about it then. This team needs to score runs regardless. hrumpf
