Reports out of Texas this morning say the Rangers' meeting with Prince Fielder was a, "... 'very preliminary' step in potential contract negotiations," as Dallas Morning News' writer Evan P. Grant quoted Rangers president Nolan Ryan stating Saturday in an article entitled, "Nolan Ryan calls meeting with Prince Fielder very preliminary." The Hall of Fame pitcher and Rangers executive, GM Jon Daniels, Asst. GM Thad Levine and manager Ron Washington reportedly met with the 27-year-old slugger after, "Boras requested Friday's meeting with the Rangers," according to another Dallas Morning News' blog post entitled, "Sources: Rangers met with Prince Fielder, agent Scott Boras on Friday."
Chicago Cubs' skipper Dale Sveum said the Cubs weren't going to sign the 27-year-old slugger this afternoon in a Q&A with fans. ESPN.com's Sahadev Sharma, in an article entitled, "Dale Sveum: No Prince Fielder for Cubs", quoted the new Cubs' skipper saying, "'There haven't been any discussions with us for Prince, that's just not going to happen.'" Florida Sun-Sentinel writer Juan C. Rodriguez quoted a source Thursday night in an article entitled, "Miami Marlins have not changed stance on Fielder; Cepedes remains top target", who told him the Fish weren't pursuing the free agent first baseman. There's no word on whether or not the Seattle Mariners are still interested in Fielder after last night's deal with the Yankees.

The Rangers and Marlins were two of the teams MLB.com's writer Bill Ladson's sources told him were in the mix for Fielder, in an article tonight entitled, "Nats still in running to land free-agent Fielder", in which he quoted an "industry source" who said he/she, "... believes that the Nationals want to give Fielder a six- or seven-year deal," and are willing to offer the Milwaukee Brewers' '02 1st Round pick a no-trade clause. The MLB.com Nats beat writer also noted that another source told him the Nationals are out of market for soon-to-be-free agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes since the Nats, "... believe that Cespedes is best suited as a corner outfielder," rather than the center fielder they need/want.
Yoenis Cespedes offered a list of six teams yesterday he said had shown interest in signing the outfielder, who's currently not-impressing as a DH with Aguilas Cibaenas in the Dominican Winter League. Is the relative lack on interest in Prince Fielder what's leading Scott Boras to seek out interest from teams like the Texas Rangers? Are the Washington Nationals the only serious suitors in the market for the HR-hitting, high-OBP, heavyweight slugger? The 6-7-year deal MLB.com's Mr. Ladson wrote about today is similar to the sort of deal ESPN.com's Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) said last night on Twitter interested teams were hoping would work:
"One exec today believes WAS, TEX, CHC may ultimately get this Fielder contract structure: 6 years, opt-out after 3 years, 22-24m a year."
Another week of rumors is over. Wednesday's deadline for the Rangers to sign 25-year-old Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters' right-hander Yu Darvish is seen as an important date in the Fielder negotiations as it might eliminate the last non-Nats option for Fielder and Boras before the inevitable mystery team emerges. Nolan Ryan told ESPNDallas.com's Richard Durrett that he was surprised how big Yu Darvish was after the pitcher visited Texas recently. After meeting with Prince Fielder last night, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writer Tom Haudricourt (@Haudricourt) tweeted that the, "Rangers reportedly were impressed with how trim Fielder was during Fri meeting. Good time to ease worries about body going forward." If Fielder isn't a fit in Texas, he'll fit in just right hitting between Ryan Zimmerman and Michael Morse in D.C.

Sign Fielder....
The Nats need to make a serious move for Prince. His bat will make the Nationals a contender and Rizzo will really look good. Just think how his signing will boost attendance….A win-win situation for both sides. Pay the man, he is worth it!!!!

Heh...still haven't given up your dream of
another out-sized 1B.
(Me? I’m just tired of Boras’ hostage taking. I’m glad the GMs haven’t paid the ransom…yet. [someone will as P and C date nears. Sigh.])

Pay him his money...

Lineup...
Total guess and no stats or anything backing it up.. but just think about this one…
1. Desmond (Continue the improvement from second half?)
2. Werth
3. Zimmerman
4. Fielder
5. Morse
6. Harper
7. Espinosa
8. Ankiel
9. Pitcher
I don’t know about you – but that gets me TORQUED!!!
smashmouthsteel - January 15, 2012
A lot of passed balls
as Casey Stengel would say.
jbg2772 - January 15, 2012
Who catches?
I bet The Arm could throw some guys out though.

Hasn’t Artistfork been lobbying for a left handed catcher? Well there you go.
PerryMason - January 15, 2012
HITTER
Left handed hitter………:O(

Mike Squires approves this post
jbg2772 - January 16, 2012

Oof...no D, but big O.....
MissB - January 15, 2012 via mobile
If you can live with the passed balls 4 outfielders will help the D

Unless he's suggesting a grand return behind the plate for Harper
Because you definitely want your 19 year old once in a generation bat to get Posey’d blocking the plate.

And arguably an even better lineup with Ramos in the #8 spot ;-)
d_c_guy - January 15, 2012
Hmmmmmm......
I think Werth does better behind the big bats, regardless of whether we sign Fielder. But then again, being a baseball exec is not my strong point or expertise. Regardless, another fan perspective:
Without Harper:
1. Dez
2. Ankiel/Bernie/Cam
3. Zim
4. Fielder
5. Werth
6. Morse
7. Espi
8. Ramos
With Harper:
1. Dez
2. Espi
3. Zim
4. Fielder
5. Werth
6. Morse
7. Ramos
8. Harper (8 takes pressure off the kid in his first season)
I wonder how much the FO laughs at all of our elementary suggestions. lol
sullyzz - January 15, 2012
the #8 hitter sees junk and for Harper, that would be more pressure
Ramos doesn’t seem to mind and is an important attribute to have. Desmond was all but ruined there, for those who don’t recall….
cat daddy3000 - January 15, 2012
Matt Kemp cut his teeth at #8
it works for some people
dc Roach - January 15, 2012
I think it's the wrong experience to have since we're bringing up a teenager...
cat daddy3000 - January 15, 2012
Yeah, what he said! lol
d_c_guy - January 15, 2012
I'd hit Harper #7, Ramos #8 to take the pressure off the kid
Just imagine the junk he’d see with the pitcher batting behind him. Ramos has been amazingly productive in that spot, which can be tough to hit in (Desmond really sucks as a #8 hitter, for example). As a side benefit, it does split Morse and Ramos with a LH bat.
Although I’d be more inclined to hit Werth #2, Morse #6 and Espinosa #7 (in the “with Harper” lineup). I just want as many people on base as possible in front of the 3-4-5 guys.
d_c_guy - January 15, 2012
yes, Werth is going to hit second, so his OBA has some value...
Morse #5 and The Kid at #6 is something I hope Davey tries right away and not sneak up on after exhausting all other combos… that’s if that player that’s not on the team yet is on the team…
cat daddy3000 - January 15, 2012
Lineup in Texas
1. Ian Kinsler 2B(All Star)
2. Elvis Andrus SS(All Star)
3. Josh Hamilton LF/CF(All Star)
4. Prince Fielder 1B/DH(All Star)
5. Adrian Beltre 3B (All Star)
6. Nelson Cruz RF (All Star)
7. Mike Napoli C/DH/1B
8. Michael Young DH/1B (All Star)
9. Craig Gentry/David Murphy/Borbon OF
I mean that is a lineup.
hartman - January 15, 2012
What's this DH thing?
Patrick Reddington - January 15, 2012
That’s quite a lineup and it would be worrisome WS matchup for National League opponent if it was a team other than the Rangers… I don’t know what it is about them, Texas just seems to be one of those franchises that can’t win the big game.
PerryMason - January 15, 2012
The Rangers remind me of a local hockey team we all know
jeff550 - January 15, 2012
Or, for a generation earlier,
a certain upstate NY football team…

NORWOOD!!!

Wide Right!!!
jbg2772 - January 15, 2012
So what's going on with Darvish?
Last I heard they couldn’t come to an agreement over the contract length??
short_shifter - January 15, 2012
got 'er done!
NationalsPR:
#Nationals agree to terms w/ LHP Gio Gonzalez on contract extension thru 2016, w/ options for 2017 & ’18, thus avoiding salary arbitration.
dc Roach - January 15, 2012
a good lesson in Super 2 status........if they're worth it, the contract extensions will buy out any silly arb years...
and it “…buys out his 1st yr of free agency & add options for 2 more yrs” – Amanda Comack
cat daddy3000 - January 15, 2012
Interested to see the terms
but I like it
